Kab-Ash Trail, Voyageurs National Park 9/26/2013

"Kab-Ash Trail is a difficult hike or backpacking trip in Voyageurs National Park. This hike is perfect for those seeking solitude. The trail travels through the park’s backcountry forests and wetlands. There are four trailheads that give access to the Kabash Trail making it possible for those looking for a shorter hiker and families with small kids to hike a portion of the trail and get a look at remote sections of Voyageurs" trailmob.com

"Voyageurs National Park is an American national park in northern Minnesota near the town of International Falls established in 1975. The park's name commemorates the voyageurs—French-Canadian fur traders who were the first European settlers to frequently travel through the area. The park is notable for its outstanding water resources and is popular with canoeists, kayakers, other boaters, and fishermen. The Kabetogama Peninsula, which lies entirely within the park and makes up most of its land area, is accessible only by boat. To the east of the park lies the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness." wiki

Clinging to Life

There seems to be a lot of this up on the Canadian border. This tree has likely survived for decades. It looks like it won't last another year. Yet I have seen others like this in the north country. After visiting the same places over 30 years, I notice some of the old familiars are still hanging on. This is my first sighting of this little Jack Pine, but I hope it won't be my last.
